About Me

My photo
I am a birder, naturalist, wildlife biologist, and now an interpretive ranger currently working for Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department at the Hassayampa River Preserve near Wickenburg, Arizona. I spent the past several years following a career as a wildlife biologist and was a teaching assistant for a biology lab during grad school, with my education background consisting of an MS in Biology and BS in Forestry. I am an Arizona native and my past travels have taken me around most of the lower 48 United States, plus the state of Sonora in northwest Mexico. Before my current job I spent 1.5 years working as an environmental consultant in the Midwest based out of Kansas City (KS/MO), which gave me the opportunity to see a good portion of the Great Plains and Midwest region. My current travels are decidedly local, but I am hoping to travel abroad in the future when finances and work schedule allow. I am very content with my current career and happy to be doing a mix of environmental education and natural resource management at a wonderful desert oasis. I am looking forward to where this path takes me!

Holbrook, Heber, Porter Creek

Here are various old photos from Holbrook (June 3, 2011), flowers in our family's yard in Heber (June 4-5), and Porter Creek in Pinetop-Lakeside below Scott Reservoir (May 24 and June 5):

Plateau lizard (Sceloporous tristichus)....I think:

Western Kingbird nest in Russian-olive on Golf Course Rd. in Holbrook:

Hairy Woodpecker (dead), which unfortunately crashed into one of our windows. It's neck was completely broken, so I imagine that the force with which it hit the window made it a quick death.

Red columbines (Aquilegia desertorum, Family Ranunculaceae), which we got growing from seeds collected in Black Canyon south of Heber:

Jacob's ladder (Polemonium foliosissimum, Family Polemoniaceae):

Penstemon/beardtongue species (Penstemon sp., Family Scrophulariaceae):

Orange sneezeweed (Hymenoxys hoopesii, Family Asteraceae), which we got growing from seeds collected below the dam at Willow Springs Lake:

littleleaf mockorange (Philadelphus microphyllus, Family Hydrangeaceae):

Iris species (Iris sp., Family Iridaceae). A non-native cultivated variety, but cool-looking anyways:

Rocky Mountain irises (Iris missouriensis, Family Iridaceae) along Porter Creek:

Butterfly on iris:

Eva along Porter Creek:

golden pea (Thermopsis pinetorum, Family Fabaceae):

unknown flower along Porter Creek:

Arizona rose (Rosa arizonica, Family Rosaceae). At least I think this is Arizona rose instead of Woods' rose (Rosa woodsii). I thought I had read somewhere that the Arizona rose has darker pink petals.

Views of the riparian vegetation along Porter Creek (if the pictures seem hazy, it's because the smoke from the Wallow Fire was sweeping all the way across the Rim that day):
